Sprained Ankle Exercises
It is important to understand that the few ankle exercises you will find on the web in general do not adequately address all of the damage from an ankle sprain. Doing a few ankle circles and the alphabet is a nice little start, but there really is a lot more to it than that.
First of all, you have to remember that after a sprained ankle, there is a lot of ligament damage. That means scar tissue can develop as well as knots and adhesions. All of this inhibits natural range of motion. So, exercises are an important step in regaining natural flexibility.
Then, because of the injury, your ankles will be very stiff, bruised and weak. You have to take your time, but slowly start introducing the right kind of strengthening exercises for your ankle. Again, just ankle circles and drawing the alphabet with your toes is not nearly enough.
And obviously, rest and ice are important too, but you need to start exercising your ankles as soon as possible. You don't want to develop too much scar tissue and you don't want your ankles to get so weak that they don't heal correctly. As soon as possible, usually within 1-2 days of the injury, you need to start moving your ankle as much as possible.
Now, before we go any further, you have to remember that just because you are moving your ankle, that does not mean it should hurt. If you do any kind of movement after an injury that really hurts, you should NOT do it. You want to work the ankle with exercises that do not cause more pain. Instead, use the exercises that don't hurt, or make the ankle feel a little sore. That is okay. But, pain is an important indicator that the body is not ready for that movement yet and you should listen to it.
